PROJECT BRIEF:
The Project Brief was to create new podcast banners because the old ones lacked interest. The target demographic was politically middle-of-the road, to prep for it, I listened to podcasts from each of the three stations in order to get a clearer sense of who the target audience was for each. Many podcast banners emphasize designing a creative logo that could serve as the main element within the image. Since KFRU already had a station logo, the title would have to be creative and interesting. This meant the background had to be relevant and eye-catching but not distract from the title.
Design Philosophy
During my research, I noted the call-ins for The Sunday Round Table tended to be mostly older gentlemen and conservative working class, especially farmers so I went with a more traditional feel.
The title is stark white, emphasized with a solid red banner and the podcast is represented by an actual picture of a microphone instead of an illustrated vector art or an abstracted representation to suggest concrete, serious discussions for serious local situations.
Design Philosophy
The Morning Meeting was the most abstracted of the three slides and my personal favorite. I used smaller circles to suggest the holes of a phone or speaker – but also to imply orderly rows of people or chairs, ready to meet or assemble.
The larger circle and the use of the same gradient at different angles kept the same warm tone to suggest both a sun and a morning light.
The final design added another row of circles to the top left - this was done to unify it with the rectangular format which otherwise would have felt a little empty.
Design Philosophy
Initially I planned to take a more illustrative approach with this one. I had three shows to make banners for and my idea was to make them distinct from each other with the use of color. One predominantly red, one predominantly blue, one predominantly yellow.
Upon review of the illustrative concept, the director wanted to go a different direction. He described A Columbia Morning as KFRU’s flagship show and wanted a more high-octane concept done in the station’s branding colors - black and red
